Story help, vampires or zombies?

Im planning to write sort of a yaoi romantic horror and i want it to be post apocalyptic or something. I would normally jump straight to zombie, but one of my characters i want to add is from another story and is a vampire, and with the vampire line i could see the romance plotted out perfectly. The rest of that plot line has a dead end though, and is cliche.

Does anyone have zombie or vampire ideas i can use and have it not be cliche? And which should it be, vampires or zombies?

Aren't vampires just zombies, but really, really, really, good looking (movie reference)? I am kind of against main stream media (key word: kinda!), plus I studied a bit of rhetoric in college, so here is my take:

Vampires = Middle/High school audience (young crowd)
Zombies = High School/College audience (older crowd)

Vampires = breaking the laws of physics and very supernatural
Zombies = more realistic and are subject to most laws of science

So I guess the answer I can give is:

Vampires = Fantasy based story
Zombies = Fiction based story
