I have a 2001 Subaru Legacy which I bought second hand a few years ago. The problem is that about a year ago I noticed that the antifreeze is leaking slowly/dripping underneath the engine when the car is standing. So about once a week I have to add more antifreeze to keep the level constant.
To make things worse, I also noticed that sometimes I get a very strong smell of something like gasoline in the interior of the car when I'm driving, which goes away for a while and then on another day comes back.
The car has 120,000 miles on it and is an automatic transmission.
I haven't had any problems with it before this, and my mechanic said that it might be a crack in the engine, which means that the engine may need to be replaced, but he doesn't know for sure. He said to know for sure, I have to leave the car in the shop and they'll take the engine off and see what's the problem.
Could someone help me out? I would really appreciate it.

P.S> I remember that before buying this car I accidentally peeked at the car's dealership file which the salesman accidentally left on the table. The car was 4 years old when I bought it, and a sheet of paper in the file said the dealership bought it for $9000, and something about "rear-engine /rear knocking", which I'm guessing they probably fixed and kept quiet. I still bought the car, but now I'm thinking that maybe I shouldn't have, and that there was something wrong with this car a while back which they did "a quick fix on" and now is coming out???
I paid $14000 for it 4 years ago (and that's after my old trade-in)
