My son, who is 11, got a pet rat for his birthday last week. It is a male rat. The store said he is about a year old.
He seems quite happy and is given tons of attention during the day, but we are not always home or awake.
So it's all day on weekends, but only after school till about 10 pm on weekdays.
So I would like to buy him another male so they could play together when he is at school or sleeping.
I love him to death already and I am so scared something will happen when I introduce another one!
I've read some tips, like scenting with vanilla and cleaning out the cage first, but has anyone got anymore? They won't go mental and kill each other will they? Or do I just have to wait and see if their personalities mesh? Thanks in advance for any advice!

Okay here what you do, you will wait a little longer to get him use to living in the house more. Then you hold both of them and slowly get closer and closer..watch there expresstions..sometimes it will take a while for them to get use to eachother but if you use my method I am sure they will either show you that they dont like eachother with hissing or they will not do anything..good luck

I had rats once i when i got other male i but them in a bar cage so they could stick there noses out and put the cages right next to another. It worked we did it about 5 times and after that we put them in together and they played and did harm each other but last year they both died of old age and i was ever so sad but have got a dog now and i love him to bits. Hope that helped.
