Temporary internet connexion in the US?

Anyone in Georgia State (US) can tell me if there are possibilities of getting temporary internet connexion (just for 2/3 months) without a year-contract and without landphone connexion in one's own apartment? Realise I have only a desktop PC without wifi connectivity. Also why is it that in the US the mobile prepaid subscription and rates are exhorbitant, as against in Europe n Far East?
