For the IB I'm writing a 4000 word A1 English Extended Essay. Typically, if a student chooses to write an EE in the subject of English, one compares two pieces of literature by answering a thesis question. I really want to do contemporary feminine literature because of my love for Sylvia Plath (ok I know she's not exactly 'feminist literature' but there are definitely strong undertones in her work) and since I don't want to do it on poetry, that narrows it down to 'The Bell Jar'. I am more than happy for one of the books to be The Bell Jar because I love the psychological aspect of it and I think it would be interesting to analyze the symbolism and importance of the title, amongst other things. So now I am looking for a second book to compare it with. Originally I was going to use 'Girl, Interrupted' or 'The Virgin Suicides' but I've decided I would like a better established and less modern piece of literature. So, I'm currently considering Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf or The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Perhaps One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest or The Catcher in the Rye if I stray from the "feminist" perspective. What do you think? Any other suggestions? Feel free to suggest a topic of comparison between the two also.
