The masking function can be performed with Photoshop several different ways. For example, any selection made with a selection tool can be converted to a mask. Open the PORTRAIT file in the Samples folder. Double-click on the Magic Wand to bring up its options palette. Set the Tolerance to 32 and anti-aliasing option should be turned on. The Magic Wand can be used to select the background behind the young girl, but with the color blending of that type of background, it does not necessarily get ALL of the background. Expand the selection by using the Select -> Grow command. Now choose Select -> Similar to add the additional blue in the background.
