Nursery school teacher says to her class, "Who can use the word ’Definitely’ in a sentence?"
First a little girl says "The sky is definitely blue" Teacher says, "Sorry, Amy, but the sky can be gray, or orange..."
Second little boy..."Trees are definitely green" "Sorry, but in the autumn, the trees are brown."
Little Johnny from the back of the class stands up and asks:
"Does a fart have lumps?"
The teacher looks horrified and says..."Johnny! Of course not!!!"
Dryden's "A Discourse Concerning the Original and Process of Satire"
"Neither is it true that this fineness of raillery is offensive. A witty man is tickled while he is hurt in this manner, and a fool feels it not."
This is a brilliant defense of satire. For if one understands it, it may sting but also delight--but if one doesn't understand it, no harm is done! Dryden seems to admire those who take his satiric chiding gracefully, and pity those who don't even take it at all. This also emphasizes the effectiveness of satire as a medium for bringing about change, because simply name-calling and openly chastising can put the receipt of the treatment on the defensive, whereas satire moves in so smoothly (and often humorously) that it is almost flattering to the offending party to have their faults treated in such a witty manner. In this way, satire truly is the "fineness of raillery" that Dryden claims it to be--it is chastisement for the refined.
