I need a quick fix, because it's almost 9PM and I can't go get it looked at tonight and don't want my battery to die during the night. It's a 1997 Ford Ranger, and doesn't have the option of turning the light to "off" (just "on" or "auto"). What can I do, short of disconnecting the fuse?

Just repaired the same year truck with the same problem last week. The button that's located inside the door jam near the door's hinges isn't turning off when the door is closed because the button isn't compressing enough. You need to get a socket and remove the button and disconnect the 2 wires until your able to purchase another button. Usually if your able to put a wad of tape on top of the button then close the door that may work. Other temporary alternatives are to remove the interior bulb or dis-connect the negative battery terminal end. Good luck and hope this helps.
