The real Elizabeth Bathory?

Hungarian Countess Erzebeth Bathory, Elizabeth in English, is known as the Blood Countess and the greatest mass murderess in history. But are the stories all true? There are theories she was the victim of a political conspiracy. Its known that European lords owed her money and didn't want to pay their debts. Also she was known as a healer and in those days women healers were accused of being witches and everything else. Also in those days rumors flew fast, especially sensational ones. Also the stories about her taking bloodbaths only became popular many years after her death.
She was not a saint. She was abusive to her servants but while that wasn't right it was not uncommon among nobility at the time. By all accounts she was a good mother and a physician of sorts so this is not a totally evil person.
So maybe the stories of the Blood Countess are exagerated?

So wait... you start off by mentioning some rather sensational attributes... greatest mass murder in history etc. But then as it goes on... we end up with the whole:



Anyone who was a habitual murder probably doesn't fall under the 'not a totally evil person' label. Even if only 1% of the accusations against her are true... she's a pretty grim piece of work. Just because someone raises their kids in an ok fashion doesn't get them off the hook if they are also a psychopath or a serial killer. Why should it?!

I don't really see how the whole 'by all accounts' fits here... because by a ton of accounts she was a miserable psychopath. So it's certainly not all accounts marking her down and a loving mom. The stories could be exaggerated or they could be true. Or a bit of both. There is really no way to tell. Did you just happen to see this on television?
 
Interesting. I love history so I looked her up. interesting read.
 
No i didn't. Ive quite a bit about her. She is a fascinating historical figure. Brillant historian you are you should know that. You should be aware of everything i wrote and know how things were in those days. Did you even bother to read the post?
 
My history major I focused on europe in the 20th century for the most part. which is why I had never heard of her. In case you're wondering about me too.
 
I pointed out the fact several Lords owed her money and didn't want to pay and the fact that women healers were often accused of witchcraft which lead to outlandish accusations. That should raise some questions.
 
I'm surprised that you've bothered given that she comes from such an inferior culture by your standards. I would have thought you'd have relegated her to the untouchables camp. I mean after all... she's Eastern European... certainly in no way advanced as those Western Europeans.




Sorry I must have reached my quota on serial killer history. If you had actually read my post you'd have understood that I read your post... mostly because I wouldn't just pop into a random thread and start asking questions about Hungarian Countess Erzebeth Bathory. It sort of tends to work that way.

Im not goth. And if you could read youd notice i never said she was a saint. I just asked if the story could be exagerated.

15th Century European Aristocrat. You just described a serial killer definition there, well done. The only reason she got an honorable mention is because she has boobs. 650 deaths ... pah ... half the great lords of Europe killed that many in their sleep.

Maybe she did, maybe she didn't. Short of new historical data/evidence, I can't see how this will end meaningfully. And this is the internet, goshdarnit, I insist on meaning!
 
aint this forum for anyone? I mean the rules don't say you can join and post only if you did or do a ma, do they?

actually she is in the OT forum, she is within her rights, I think, to post about a historical person or event she finds interesting. As a person with a history major, I like to read stuff like this.
 
Is it exaggerated? Almost certainly, but that doesn't mean none of it's true, doesn't mean it is either. Regarding your parents/physician argument, I'm not convinced. I've known too many doctors. Nah seriously, I mean SHIPMAN was a physician, doesn't change what he did.
