Ach right enough, and no doubt I'm one of the worst culprits. Don't mind me, am grumpy 'cos I'm flathunting.
Which is TOTALLY off topic. But hey, I'm not posting much on topic because I don't know that much about it, am hoping someone who does will so I can get something other then what I can find on wikipedia. All thse snippets get me intrigued and and then I'm getting intellectual blueballs without any more information
Well i say the fact that several Lords were in debt to her and didn't want to pay makes the conspiracy theory plausible. Also the fact that she was a woman healer would leave her open to accusations of witchcraft and all the bizarre tales that came with it.
Not saying she was a saint. She was known for beating her servants, which would also leave her open for murder accusations. She wasn't the only noble who was guilty of the crime of cruelty to servants.
Anyone care to address this go ahead.
You will never convince me she had over 600 killings on her hands. Not saying she was totally innocent, her inhumane treatment of her servants could have caused death, but wild rumors flew like birds in those days and false witness was often borne, especially in a case like that where the prosecution was made up of powerful people.
Isn't it convient that several Lords got out of paying their debts because of her conviction?
BTW she was accused of being a vampyre, do you believe that?
1. Modern ideas of vampires came much later than her, so no, no she wasn't. The myth of her bathing in blood etc came about over 100 years after her arrest.
2. The number she was actually accused of was around 80, though there was one witness who testified to over 600, forensic evidence being non existant back then, they couldn't verify t exactly. Still, 300 witness's? Along with confessions from her servants who had joined in with the torture ceremonies? The fact that they found victims IN HER CASTLE WHO WERE BEING TORTURED. Makes the idea of her as a mis-understood victim of conspiracy very suspicious indeed.
3. Her acts of cruelty sound pretty consistent with a lot of vicious noblemen/women throughout those ages. It's entirely possible that Lady Bathory was simply a derranged woman who attained a level of power that allowed her to act out fantasies... until of course she ended up killing the daughters of some important people.
4. You're right, Elizabeth Bathory did exist at a time of conspiracy plots and framing. But the nature of her crime is not consistent with most forms of conspiracy. If you want to get rid of one noble-person the easiest way is to claim they are blasphemous or plotting against the king, and have them done away with. Not to create a huge narrative of torture.
5. It is very rare in history to have peasants accuse nobles and have a noble reprimanded on that basis. If you think that that could of happened in a feudal system like that in the areas of Wallacia and Moldovia in the 17th Centuary, then you need to re-read your history books. Feudalism in Carpathia did not operate on an Egalitarian basis!
Who knows. I already said she was no saint. her abuse of servants could have caused death but she was NOT the only noble who was guilty of brutality. Why weren't other nobles ever called down for it?
There were lots of witnesses at witchcraft trials to. You believe their testimonies? Many testimonies were coerced back then.
She was mean yes but was she insane? She seemed to socially function pretty well for a crazy woman.
BTW i never said she was an innocent victim, her behavior was criminal but was she really a serial killer?
Does the fact several Lords got out of paying their debts to her due to her conviction raise your eyebrows a bit?
If you are saying "Well she was a cold hearted killer but she did not kill as many as they said" then that is hardly relevant is it? She did indeed kill some.
I don't see you jumping to the defence of Gilles De Rais for the same reasons. This whole thread seems....well absolutely pointless actually. You don't offer evidence, your knowledge of history is absolutely appalling and you are unable to maintain a teneable stance
So.......where now? For your next thread mught I suggest "The Millenium Falcon - Can it really make the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs?"
No im not advocating vindication. Did i say i did? I just question whether the story is entirely authentic. Did you not understand that? You're no genius yourself obviously. if you don't like this thread then stay out of it.
BTW you have failed to address a single issue i posted. What about the Lords who owed he money and didn't want to pay? Does that not arouse your curiosity? And why were other nobles not called out for their own brutality?
