The World Cup

We should give a try with Carrick as a holding player, Gerrard is such a different player when he's not being restricted holding for Lampard. At least that way you have the option of a player like Lampard on the bench to bring on.

Lennon & Walcott needs to be given a game for the experience add a bit of pace to go alongside Owen, Gerrard and J.Cole. I don't you could find a quicker midfield & forward line if they play against Sweden!!, inject a bit of pace into our play for a change be one for the fans.

It has to be either Gerrard or Lampard - not both. At the moment, it has to be Gerrard.

You're from Newbury - do you know Theo Walcott by any chance?

NB: EVERYONE MAKE SURE YOU SEE THE SECOND ARGENTINA GOAL AGAINST SERBIA - IT SOUNDS LIKE AN ABSOLUTE CLASSIC!!!!!

We will play either ecuador or germany next round and, unless something changes during the sweden game, i will not be holding my hopes that high in all honesty.

Good God, where to start? That was one of the best performances I've ever seen. In the first post of this thred I asked if anyone would be able to beat Brazil, if Argentina play like that I don't give Brazil a prayer.

First they go and score one of the goals of the tournament, then Cambiasso goes and scores one of the best goals of any tournament. 24 passes with 9 different players involved. Then Maxi scores his second and its 3-0 at half time.

Second half they bring on Messi and Tevez. Messi sprints inside the area and plays it across for Crespo to score. Then Tevez nutmegs one defender, gets a bit of luck and finishes well. Before Messi beats a defender and fires through the goalies legs. For those of you who lost count that made it 6-0

That was the kind of match every football fan wants to see... brilliant

unless you're from serbia and montenegro

quality play by argentina though, if we're judging by what we've seen so far i would definitely put them and spain above brazil this year

I agree with Argentina. I thought they were one of 2 teams that legitimately had a shot at Brazil. Not sold on Spain yet. I think it was more of the Ukraine playing poorly. Spain usually does well in the beginning, hopefully they can keep it up as it would make for some great matches later. Argentina just played a perfect game.

wow, argentina, take it easy lol...i turned the t.v. on and i caught the score, but then i had to wait for the score to run across the screen again cuz i thought i read the score was 6-0....then i realized it was 6-0....haven't seen any highlights yet, but it must have been a hard game to watch if serbia montenagro was that bad

LOL, no I don't know Theo unfortunately!!!, I'm sure he'll have a few hangers-on after the world cup though.

Too right, they have never seemed to gel and don't look comfortable playing together, and with Gerrard's form of late you always fell somthing will happen compared to Lampard.

What a game!!!!!!! Luckily England shouldn't meet them until the final if we win the group

Spain, like Portugal funnily enough, often sound great or occasionally look good but don't seem to produce when it counts. I dont rate theri chances.

Argentina on the ither hand, oh boy they're looking like favourites to me at the moment. Brazil are looking ordinary by their standards and I just don't see where other threats are coming from? Italy? Germany??

The Gerrad.Lampard problem is acute, two fantastic players in their own right but just not right together. On his showing last night it has to be Lampard that loses out.

Sven could always play Hargreaves&Lampard one half then Carrick&Gerrard the other to keep up his policy of substituting everyone in sight!

Lennon put some good balls in yesterday as I remember? Got to be a good bet to come on as a sub...

Mitch

Sven would do well to remember Alf Ramsey's words: "I won't pick my best players - I will pick my best team."

Ivory Coast v. Holland - almost a classic, but spoiled somewhat by a poor ref, who fell for too many dives and punished a number of perfectly good tackles. (Good to see Arjen 'I promise not to dive any more' Robben get booked though. ) Still one of the better games though.

Ivory Coast must be kicking themselves tonight, because having been narrowly beaten by the best side in the tournament in their opening game, this was one they could have and should have won. They wasted too many opportunities in the first half, and didn't make enough clear-cut chances in the second. Did score possibly the best goal of the tournament though .(I haven't seen the Argentinian goals against Serbia yet.)

Great result for Holland. They have some quality forwards, some fairly decent defenders, and a very good keeper, but their midfield is lightweight. In both their games, the opposition has been able to carve out openings far too easily.

The natural game of England does not work in internationals with an Italian style coach. Let's be honest, in the Premiership, midfields are essentially ignored. The whole game is quick tempo, essentially by-passing the midfield to get it to the forwards. This might sound extreme, but compare it to Serie A, where midfields are a lot more technically composed.
So talking about England using Carrick as a holding midfielder might fit into an Italian style gameplan but it is not the way people play in the Premiership. The Premiership does not breed players like Pirlo, in the same way that Serie A does not breed players like Gerrard.
Unfortunately, Sven is truly an Italian-style coach, and it just doesn't fit into the natural English play.

I would like to see Mexico win, but with today's game, that is very very far.

So Germany it is. Remember last world cup when nobody thougt that they would actually do anything and they became sub champions.

hahah atleast you didn't do what i did... saw 80mins of Aust vs Japan, went to bed on the 81st minute... OWNED!
(for the record, the aussies scored 3 goals in 10mins and i missed all 3)

Can't forget the lovely fans

Crappy match! That was a great match... the USA played really well and deserved the point even with 9 men they managed to not be overwhelmed though in fairness Italy did only have 10. The disallowed goal was lucky for Italy too. It was a frickin exciting match!

yeah i thought so too. despite having no real affinity for either team i was on the edge of my seat most the way though. im not sure if USA deserved to go to 9 men though. i thought the red card decision was pretty harsh.
