...if...? One party has a disrespectful attitude? My bf is this way with his own family and towards me. He makes rude comments, mean 'jokes' and calls me 'dumbsh*t in situations where others would usually say '(ya) silly!' He also raises his voice and name-calls during disagreements or when he's being confronted about something. I always try to find a way to be nice and 'talk' not 'fight' (tried everything..avoid using the word 'you' and saying 'this makes ME feel ___' ) but he always gets combative. Is it true it's always both people that cause problems in the relationship? I believe he'd have this problem no matter who he's with, even though he's insisted its only me that irritates him to behave this way. I find it hard to believe; he told me his pet peeve w/ last serious gf was that she 'didn't talk' when they were disagreeing- I see why! Sometimes I feel like avoiding talking to him b/c of his feisty behavior. Thoughts?

"It takes two" is BS because one partner can try with all their heart to make a relationship work but if the other won't do the same or engage in the relationship, it's doomed.

As for your bf...he isn't "feisty", he's an abusive pig and if you had any brains you'd run screaming.

Yes, it takes two.

In your case, it takes one to act like an a$$, and the other to put up with it.

Dump him and find someone who treats you with respect.
