To be fair I think most surveyors do more than that.
The guy that did our house and the guy that did the house we're buying both did a basic homebuyers report and did more than that. Looked in the loft, looked in every room, asked questions etc etc.
It's just the madness that gets me that means I'd have to pay for one on any property I'd want to buy. Even if some other buyer had already had one done the week before.

The common enemy is the whole process. It's all arse about face with the innocent buyer bearing the brunt of it.
By all accounts Scotland has a much better way of doing it that isn't as much hassle.

One of my mates is in an awful one bed flat that he swears blind is haunted by an old lady in a block full of council tenants. He won’t even think about trading up because the whole house buying process has put him off for life... Even if it means he’s losing out in the long term. By the time he’s finished paying off the mortgage on this flat, he’d have shelled out nearly £75,000 on a flat worth about £20,000 or less... GRRRRRRRRRRR to the system!

Broadband on the blink. I can live without Facebook if I have to, but my mobile charges will be through the roof 'cos the landline keeps going mental and trying to deafen me with shrill whistling when I try to dial out........

Car insurance providers!

What a bunch of thieves!

How can the company who insured me last year justify doubling my quote for this year, when nothing has changed. The quote is more than the stupid car is worth!

And how can all the others quotes I got be at least £150 more than I paid last year!

Have you phoned them and said you want to move? I got a quote for £700 when Admiral wanted £1200 off me. I rang them up to cancel the policy and they told me that because the cheaper quote was from a sister company they could match it (which wasn't bad considering I'd only been driving a year, had the parents on the policy and already wrote off one car...)

Haven't got round to phoning up yet, but I'll give it a try and see what happens. My cheapest 'compare the market' quote is currently £546 from the RAC, with Halifax (who I was with last year) quoting me £876 in my renewal letter (I think last year it was ~£400ish).

I also hate the fact that the moment you enter your details and get a quote online you get a phone call from the company who are the cheapest. If I want to follow up on a quote I'll damn well call them!

Nope, its why you have a look on the terms and conditions page (that bit where you have to tick the box to say you've read them) - thats where the opt out of communication tick boxes are hiding

I did hear the other day, not sure if it's true or not, that insurance companies & comparison sites share cookies when giving a quote online & to get a fair quote you need to delete your cookies.

I had a similar thing with my contents insurance, Renewal quote has gone up by ~45% even though i have never claimed. I haven't had chance to shop around yet but my current insurer has been the cheapest for the last few years.
