Things that make you go GRRRRR.... (Part 2)

Those are slightly different IMO. They're not suggesting actual mentally retarded people are bad somehow - they're saying, in short, that you are behaving like you are mentally retarded when you're not.

Which was what I was accepting in that reply to you. And pointed out again just now replying to Seventh.

actually, they do. else they would not be derogatory. now, a mental handicap IS a functional disadvantage, although it has no bearing on one's inherent worth as a person, which is where the analogies do differ, as an accusation of idiocy does refer to something that represents functional inferiority in many circumstances and tasks, but it can still be offensive to the people that fall into that category, since the one using the term is using it derogatorily.

I'll be honest here, after all the good stuff Henry II did I'll let an insult he threw at his own kid slide. If you disagree he did anything good then he did much worse things than call his son handicapped.

I don't think it's that, it's saying you are behaving as if you were MR when you're not and should know better.

It's more like if I took the piss out of a bigger guy for not being stronger than me. It's not that being small/female is inherently bad, it's that he should be able to out power me but can't...

You're also saying its undesirable and therefore bad I would think?

Which would be ironic considering the amount of complaining you do about being told you're weak because you're small and female. Everything you've ever said about why that's bad would be why your example would be.

edit: More coherent - If you're allowed to assume a big man is strong then everyone is allowed to assume that you, as a small female, are weak.

True, just trying to think of an example...

Maybe a better one would be saying to a 12 year old kid 'you're behaving like a 6 year old'.

It's not that the 6 year old is 'bad' somehow. It's that the 12 year old has had 6 more years to learn and become more mature yet he/she is behaving as if he/she were still 6, which shows lack of maturity.

Its a tougher one but its still saying acting like you're 6 when you're 12 is undesirable. To go deeper into it I'd say that's bad because you're also then assigning maturity levels to age brackets when age bracketing is stupid anyway. If its fine to comapre maturity like that then is it acceptable to say a 12 year old has the intelligence of a 6 year old?

It's not that people expect me to be less strong than, say, an 85kg guy that pisses me off. What pisses me off is people go to extremes. Cautioning the 105kg heavyweight not to crank submissions too hard when rolling with me is fine. What's not fine is throwing a fit because I lifted a few plastic chairs by myself (yes, people do...)

In short, it's one thing to expect that my strength is proportional to my 9 stone. Quite another to treat me as if I were outright physically disabled, which I'm not.

Because while age is largely a number, there are progressions it is reasonable to expect. Otherwise we'd all still be peeing and pooping wherever we wanted...

I admit it's a hard one to draw a line on though.

Which is stupid and as you said extreme (You know thanks to this thread I feel bad just calling something stupid now? This is why I think all this crap about what words people use is a waste of time. Give me enough time to think and I can probably dissect any negative word you use into something offensive. That's not a challenge by the way.) but at the end of the day its still assigning assumed traits to someone because of how they look, the extent to which its done doesn't change the fact that its still what people are doing.

Have to admit you picked good ages. They're too far apart for me to really use the age bracket thing effectively.

Didn't her mum get clipped? Bet she said some bad stuff in her head when that happened

edit: I just discovered bambi was male. My world has changed.

Damn you.

Well, between insulting a 12 year old by saying he/she has the maturity of a 6 year old, or directly calling the 12 year old a moronic retard, which one is really worse by societies standard today?
