But the thing is, in these events, you can't hang around and hope your opponents stumble. You have to eventually do something to win, and for two days, Tiger hasn't done that.*He is hitting the middle of greens instead of carving the ball close. He's missing the putts that need to fall when his team really needs them to go. And like the past two seasons, when a shot really needs to be pulled off, Tiger is a shadow of his former self.
And a lot of his 0-2-0 record can easily be blamed on his partners. Steve Stricker was rusty on Thursday when they set a new record for margin of a loss at the Presidents Cup. Dustin Johnson wasn't much better on Friday, barely being a factor on the final five holes in their match against Jason Day and Aaron Baddeley.
But isn't this how Tiger's golf game goes? The moment he finds his game it goes away. The second he's paired with someone they start playing scared and hesitant.
But the bottom line is, in these matches, it's about results. You can produce when your partner isn't and keep the boat afloat, and so far, Tiger hasn't done that. He maintains, but there wasn't any moving forward in the four-balls for Woods.
The big question is, what do you do with him? Starting Saturday, captain Fred Couples has to sit two players, and you'd have to at least look at the results of these players before making that decision. Tiger has never sat in this event, and given his relationship with Couples, probably won't now, but it isn't crazy to think it's a possibility. These matches just got a lot closer, and if you really want to win, you want to put your best teams out.
What if that meant you head out on Saturday without Tiger? Such a thought would have seemed crazy years ago. Now? Not so much.
