TIME/setting for Fruits Basket? (manga book)?

Ok, after looking and looking I'm still no closer to answering the WHEN of Fruits Basket. I'm assuming the WHERE is China? or is it Japan? (It's called Tokyopop, but we're talking Chinese zodiac?) Great story line, but the setting is throwing me, and it's for a class project!

Yeah, I see what you mean. Only thing is, I kinda thought that *all* manga are from feudal Japan time, but you are right: it doesn't say!
 
It takes place in Japan because they have the Chinese Zodiac curse doesn't mean that it takes place in China.You have to take pay real close to the manga and the anime it says it takes place in Japan and even has Japanese cultures in this story.I think it said in the anime and manga that someone put Chinese Zodiac Curse on them that every genertation 13 of them will have the curse .:3_9_7[1]:
