-a karate instructor should be at least a sandan (3rd), this is the minimum rank where you are eligible for the license of sensei, in japanese and okinawan organizations some require you to be a yondan.

-the most important quality of a good instructor is they must first be a good student. there is always something to learn, you should keep an open mind.

-and always have a lesson plan ready and be able to make changes to it as the class dictates. you never know when someone may ask you to teach something.

-have an understanding of human anatomy, and body mechanics.
you should also have an idea of some basic first aid and take a few classes in it.

-explain each technique and then demonstrate it.

-watch how your instructor teach and what he does, and how he organizes his class, dont try to be exactly like him be yourself, just follow his example.

if you want a students point of view
a lot of my friend that are black belt occasionally take classes.

its good to be loud and confident (fake it if you don't feel it), i respond best to my friends who know what they are doing. Practise yelling to start and stop classes, it will help with confience.

good luck, i've seen people get better over time

Start teaching...ask questions...pay attention to feedback, or ask for it, from the students. Just remember that as a Sensei the students are more important than you are.

The first thing I have my students do that begin teaching at our dojo is to start logging their experience in a journal that I provide to them. This way they have a record to look back on and learn from as well as our instruction classes just for future Sensei of the dojo.

Teaching is a great way to really learn your system. It will show you all the things that you have done as mistakes and help you understand why they are done a certain way. The biggest thing I would say is that, as a new black belt, you should not be in charge of a class but rather helping out.

If your Sensei wants you teach or be in charge of a class on your own then you better be good at teaching, have experience and get PAID.

Well I can give you some advice for later in life. If you get serious and want to make money do what my karate instructor would do in college. Every semester he would have a new class of students for the college credits. We would learn moves hai ya this and that then at the end he would let them know they can continue training with him if they want (for $$ of course). So my advice is find out how to teach at a college if you want to make money with it later on.
