Torrent Files and WinRAR?

Ok so i'm new to downloading torrent files and using WinRAR but a friend is constantly telling me how easy it is to do.. he has yet to show me! Where should i download torrent files from and how do i open them with winrar and what can i watch the files with when i extract them? I'm confused all the way around!!!

The Pirate Bay or Demonoid.

Depedening on what extension the uploader used, you might use WinRAR or you might use other unarchiving methods such as 7zip.
