Tottenham Riots

A couple of cars got smashed up last night in Gipton in Leeds. Locals say that the gang weren't from round there, but I suspect that they were probably from another part of Gipton.

How pathetic is that - vandalising cars on a council estate. These little toe-rags deserve a thorough kicking.

Various sources reporting that there is going to be gangs coming to birmingham from up north to seek vengeance for the three asian lads killed in the hit and run last night. Apparently this is a (slightly edited) transcript of the message being sent via SMS:

‘everyman keep off the road tonight, Birmingham is going to be madness, people from london, leicester, derby, manchester to F up birmingham of them 3 asian guys that got killed in winson green there coming to riot hard and i don’t want no one to lose their life because of it, stay in your yards and pass this on’

Also rumours that the Zulu's (Birmingham City Footbal Club Gang) are mobilising in anger at the damage being done to "their" city (which is a laugh).

Probably all rubbish, and i really hope so, it's bad enough when they haven't got a reason to riot.

Still going strong, it's just not big news recently. A lot of the young guys who kicked of in the 80's and 90's still go to the match for a fight, they are just a lot greyer now, and they are teaching the next generation the trade.

*Sigh* The 3 lads died in Aston , not Winson Green , can these clowns get anything right ?

I've heard rumors of Blues and Villa "joining forces

I've just got back from the city centre , the authorities seem to be taking it seriously , i was turned away from the Bullring just before 4.00 , the rest of town seemed to be closing up around that time , by the time i left at 5.00 the Bullring was pretty much boarded up for protection and the police were telling people to leave the area.

There are riots that happen all over the place all the time, in fact, Wikipedia has a list of riots, many of which occurred in the UK. But, I think this is on a much larger scale than anything that's happened in the US recently and riots are not common in the US--certainly, it seems, no more common than in the UK. I think, and correct me if I'm wrong, that this riot is a much larger event (or at least more violent) than the last 4 items on the list. So, if you think that this riot means that the UK is becoming like the US because we also had an extremely violent riot in 1992, well, then go ahead and think that.

Someone was trying to imply that the US didn't have riots. I corrected the implication, that's all.

And no, it's not really more violent than many in the US. The number of dead and injured is surprisingly low for such a supposedly major event.

Even ignoring the riot I didn't think that was that bad. Not compared to what I expected from the title anyway. They're using plastic batons not their normal metal ones so the hits aren't comparable to normal baton hits, and while they hit him mroe than they probably ought to have done it was only a couple times and stopped once he did. Hardly a rodney king moment.

Also great tackle by the one in the corner who went for the cyclist.

I wasn't originally trying to imply that the US doesn't have riots--I was challenging the notion that this riot means that the UK is becoming "like the US".
