its not but if your poor does it matter, attacking the shops and businesses of your community is not something I condone, but the riot was not started for that sole purpose and there for I fail to see how those involved can be written off as simple criminals.
 
your correct about the continuous riots of the 80s but this was more like the various race riots in poor urban areas of english citys in the 1980s than the miners strikes.

often (like it or not) sparked by some sort of incident with the police, inflamed by the savage economic policy's of a ruling conservative party and the ever repeating economic failings of the capital system. I dont understand why this is still so shocking to so many, I expect this is not the last example we shall see under mr Cameron's government.
 
You riot and rampage and break things - What would you call it? How is society one ounce better off by their action?

I am bored of hearing the excuse that rioting is a reasonable response to perceived government failings. It is not, it is small-minded thugs wrecking **** because they are mindlessly angry - like some red-faced baby screaming & kicking at anything in reach. Only it's rather more dangerous when an adult does it.

Get smart and solve your problems.

PS. Psychology of crowds is an interesting subject mind you...

I respect your opinion...however

- Burglary
- Robbery
- Arson
- Criminal Damage
- Assault on Police
- Assault on General Public
- Theft / Looting.

the above are crimes and were committed not out of necessity from this riot but out of opportunity. The people who own the shops who worked their fingers off the bone to feed their families do not deserve such disorder.
Serious disruption to family support and income has come to them and they had no involvement whatso ever...
 
Can anyone here explain what "kettle" refers to, for us non-UK'ers on the board?
 
It is not a UK specific term but it means "Kettling" is a police tactic for the management of large crowds during demos/protests etc.

It involves the formation of large cordons of police officers who then move to contain a crowd within a limited area. The crowd is given one choice of exit, or occasionally prevented from leaving.

Its a balancing act. I'm mostly liberal but I condone kettling because an unpleasant experience for protesters is a better alternative to the crimes that were committed during this riot. You do also realise labels like "liberal" aren't binding? Sane people tend not to stick to one idealogy in every aspect of life and thought.
 
The thing is, usually I'd be on the side of the mob. There are always riots under tory administrations. It's natural. This time, however, they can go to hell. The way the bloke in question was acting, I'd have shot him if I'd have been a policeman present at the time. People forget that a police officer was actually shot at during the course of the operation.

well that sucks. Must be a bit of a thankless job at times. Especially with the numbers and pay being cut as well.
 
So a known criminal shot at some policemen, hitting one of them, and was shot dead in return and people rioted!?!?
Stick a wall up around tottenham and let them get on with it "Escape from New York" style. See how they get along without ANY police at all.
 
It can look like that if you don't understand freedom. Freedom means that you have to accept a level of criminality because to reduce crime effectively you would need to remove freedom. It is finding the balance that is key. America has alot of freedom and hence alot of criminality. China has neither freedom nor low criminality. There is no perfect society, we just have to try to build the one that works best at that time.

That would be bad - but there is a high level of transparency in the investigation which is a good sign

If you are a criminal and you carry a gun you will get shot is probably the lesson to take away here
 
It would indeed. There's an eyewitness account saying he was pinned down by other officers and shot in the head according to the Independant though so already things seem pretty sketchy. Hard to believe your average firearms unit has resorted to that sort of thing over your average gangster though, never heard of it happening before.

On another note there was a line in the Independant article about the police receiving complaints after a "16 year old girl was hit with a baton after throwing something" and then more claims defending the police saying they were already having stuff thrown at them. I don't get the difference? The latter would be more serious but regardless the point remains that she threw something at police so they cracked her. Its complaints like that in every disorder story that I really don't understand.
 
Give it long enough and someone will come forward who witnessed police strip the guy naked whilst he was handing bibles out to starving Africans before shooting him, setting fire to the corpse and posting a dog turd through the widows letterbox
 
The IPCC have come out and stated that that is a lie.

Yeah, I don't see their point. She threw projectiles at Police, they whacked her. Seems fair to me.
