Tottenham Riots

The UK government cannot underestimate the intensity and scale of last nights events - we have to have a ciil law and order to present to the world for the Olympics next year.

Like the gang with machetes who hacked up a police officer back in the 1980s?

On a more positive note that says a hell of a lot more about Brits than a few thieving thugs - https://twitter.com/#!/Riotcleanup

The policeman at Broadwater farm was killed by machettes but not all the gang had machettes.

Notting Hill is not Broadwater Farm - although way back in the 1960s Notting Hill was very rough, now its full of luvvies and celeb types. Places like Ealing were never ransacked back in the 1980s.

No football matches were cancelled in the 1980s, due to civil disorder - it nearly happened in Scotland after the 1980 Scottish Cup Final.

You cant compare directly the 1980s to now. In the 1980s, racism was endemic in the Police. Now it remains a smaller problem. Terrorism and disengagement from some Islamic youth is a problem now, it wasn't then. In the 1980s, Thug organisation couldn't be done by mobile phone, now its relatively simple.

In the 1980s the Police had the resources to do what was necessary - now they do not, but that may change.

None of this was pretty in the 1980s and isnt any prettier now - or trivial.

Yes, it is good to see positive community reaction.

HAHA, that's great, I love this: Spontaneous cleanup volunteers rounded up via social networking!

Governments are obsolete - get done with them!

Osu!

There is an element of truth in this. Government resources cant deal with a situation (lack of funding, cuts, bureacracy and other reasons), but people work together in solidarity - for the good in this case - - but folk can work together for the bad as well - like the thugs.

However, if we get rid of Governments, anarchy takes over and potentially, every man for himself, clans and people take the law into their own hands - none of which is good.

They're so keen to get scimitars on the streets when it comes to a terrorist false alarm, where are the bloody tanks now?
No sympathy. Give them five minutes to disperse and then open fire.

There are going to be 16,000 officers on the streets of London tonight, apparently. I kind of hope the scum come out anyway. It'd be satisfying to see the Police dish out the beating that these kids clearly haven't been getting from their parents.

It's fairly likely that they will - though bad weather might put them off. My guess is they'll try to hit in areas that haven't been touched so far (a chance to get the rest of their shopping list).

Get your facts straight, there has been no riot in CHAPELTOWN and the shooting (where the guy DIDNT die) was related to a gang shooting days earlier.
The shooting was quite normal for chapeltown, what was surprising was that it was on the main road and it was blown out of proportion by the media because of the london stuff.

Although i saw a bunch of kids and masked kids appear, it didnt look like anything different from a normal day in chapeltown's backstreets.
they all dispersed anyway.

As I stated earlier, others will fill in the details correctly - Im only going on what the Beeb and the papers pumps out.

This does help to bring some balance to these events.

Osu,

Thank you.
Your statement above sounds exactly what "they" said would happen if we let the bloody banksters fail...
let'em fail and die anddisappear for Xst sake!

---> I trust we'd find great ways to cope & strive without them!

Osu!

Always, always question the media and do some research yourself. They are not to be trusted, and they do not have your best interests at heart.

speculation and rumours of events make the problem worse.
question your information sources.

only state things you know and have seen.

we dont need people freaking out about the country going into completely anarchy because a numbnut is spewing half facts and statistics with his own speculation.
you're not FOX news.

Im open to suggestions/ideas Fred, but I cant think of any right now :-> new thread 'Alternatives to established Governments'.

It cuts 2 ways, overestimating is just as bad as underestimating.

This is a public forum, not a news channel.

Im more concerned about the people in your neighbourhood digging bomb shelters because you're spewing half facts and statistics with your own speculation when they talk to you about the riots.

Ok, does this mean we should just be ignorant about it and pretend it was punch-up after the pub closed?
