Travel through the united states ?

I am from chatham ontario, and i would like to know what is the best way to travel through the united states ?
for example should i drive up to new brunswick and go to maine first and if so how should i travel through each country, like up and down or drive down the the bottom (florida) and side to side ?
 
We went from New York across to Chicago and then down to the Grand Canyon and the on to California via Las Vegas and then on the return you could start at San Diego and go to arizona and then Texas , Alabama , Mississippi and then Atlanta and florida and up the coast to New England. Then you would end in Maine because it is kind of a slow , sleepy kind of place and good to end on not start from. You need a huge start so I would think New York would be the way to go. We did the portion out to California and then flew back . Sounds like a great trip.
