traveling with a 20 gallon aquarium?

Ok so i have a 20 gallon long aquarium. I am in college and will have to go home during breaks. I will have to bring my tank home with me over the long breaks. How should i go about doing this? I was thinking, i should put the fish in a styrofoam container and then drain the tank enough so the gravel and plants don't dry out (or beneficial bacteria), and just transport everything that way. wil that work? or do i need to do anything different?
 
When you transport a tank you want it completely empty. Put your fish in a bucket with tank water. If it's a long drive, add an airstone or power hooked up to battery power. Put your fish and your filter media in another bucket of tank water. Transport the tank completely EMPTY. Otherwise you're putting stress on the tank that it's not designed to handle and run the risk of cracking the bottom panel or busting a seam.
 
you can use buckets or rubbermaid/tupperware containers. Keep filter materials wet in tank water, get the filter running as soon as possible.

Personally I'd not do this. Any break less than a week I'd just leave the fish.
 
If your driving, which it seems like you are, you should be okay...
It may be stressful on your fish though. Nobody at school will feed them?
