Triptronic and S on shifter-VW Passat?

I have triptronic and wonder if it's bad to use it if you can't drive a manual? I have never tried using it before, but wondered if I would mess up the tranny if I tried and failed. Also, what is the "S" on the shifter, and when would I use it? They tried to explain it to me at the dealership a few years ago, but I wasn't listening.
