Turntable for playing some old vinyls...need technical help with stereo/amp please!?

I was in search of a good quality but decently priced record player that i could play some old lps and eps on (I'm not an audiophile or anything, i'm just a bona fide noob at this stuff). After some investigating, I think I've settled on buying the Music Hall mmf 2.2 which looks promising and whatnot. I assume, though, that I would need an amp for it and this is where I'm a little fuzzy on things...would i be able to simply plug it into a stereo system or is there a specific type of system i would need? I've heard the words "phono amp" thrown around but am not sure what it means, if turntables require special amps or can be pluggled into regular stereos...?
