Im overwhelmed by the number of possible chord voicings one can use while improvising or composing. so i'm looking for some general guidelines pertaining to what may be some of the most common voicings used in popular music. perhaps there are certain terms or categorizations that i don't know about. any help with understanding and properly utilizing chord voicings would be greatly appreciated! 
and just to clarify im mostly looking for chord voicings as they pertain to piano playing since thats my primary instrument. usually when im trying to improvise something on the piano i can't find the "right" chord voicings that evoke a particular mood that i'm going for. and yeah, it's kind of frustrating and discouraging.
