Unique Anime Suggestions?

Some of my friends are really into watching anime but I have a hard time enjoying most of them...

Can anyone suggest a couple anime that are mostly believable and somewhat serious? The concept can be out there, just I don't like absurd dialog and everything over the top. My favorite TV shows are Lost, Sopranos, TrueBlood and The Wire.
