Using iPhone...HELP!!! (Multiple Questions)?

I got this iphone from my friend cuz he was out of his contract and i was wondering...if i could use it as an ipod??? and if i update it to the new software will it block me from using it cuz i dont have a sim card for it??? and if i cant use it because it is not activated..is there a hack to make it work as an ipod without it being activated.
 
dont jail break bad idea unless u no what ur doing yes u can use an iphone as a ipod it isnt on any service provider so u cant make calls or send sms messages its just an ipod with a camera yes u can use the camera and u can connect it to wifi so u have the internet i dont think u need a sim card for and yes u can update it think of it this way and ipod touch with a camera and built in speaker if u need any more help please let me know ill help u email me at [email protected]
 
look up on youtube how to jailbreak iphone 2.0 firmware. but you can sell the iphone on ebay and just buy a brand new ipod touch.
 
The iPhone was not meant to be used without AT&T wireless service. It may work as an iPod for a while, but it would eventually malfunction due to never being updated properly through iTunes and not having a SIM card. I have heard of people jailbreaking the iPhone, but this is generally only done for use with other networks, not for use as an iPod alone. I am actually looking to purchase an iPhone and would buy the iPhone from you if you would be willing to sell it. How much would you want for it? If you sold it you would have enough money to purchase an actual iPod that would work great for what you would want to use it for! Message me if you're interested in selling it. I work for AT&T and we are not allowed to purchase them through AT&T quite yet.
