Vent pipe elbow hangs 1/4" below rafters?

I was replacing drywall in the kitchen due to a leaky roof around the vent pipe. Well to my dismay the vent pipe is hanging lower than the rafters that I need to screw my drywall into...and 5/8 drywall is obviously very rigid and has no give. Any ideas on what I can do in order to fix this or will I need to hire someone to come out and move the pipe?

I am freaking out because my house is being shown tomorrow :( If you were a prospective buyer would you be leery of a house that had an unfinished repair?

Well a ¼" below isn't much... I know most of the tradesmen I've followed over the years would go right over that. But I know you want it right. one fix is to shim the sheet of rock down. not the entire ceiling, just as you near your obstruction. That way it would appear flat even though it isn't perfect.

Another way might be to plow out the back of the sheetrock where it interferes with the vent pipe. Even if you had to make a hole for the vent would be ok. You should be able to tape and mud right over the top of it.

Last resort is to move the pipe.. but it is a possibility. As long as you have a plan I don't think you'll scare off any potential buyers.

Good luck!
