Hi all,
Here is my problem: I have a panasonic TH-42PX64EN 42" plasma TV. When I turn it on, I see a a black vertical gap of about 3" wide on the left with three vertical thin coloured lines. The rest of the screen shows the image perfectly. After a few minutes, or when the TV is hot, I start to see several flickering vertical bars of about 2" wide starting from the upper left corner of the screen. After a few minutes, these bars becomes more intense and more opaque (from trasparent to black) until finally they cover the left half of the screen. This is the maximum where they get. Nothing on the right side of the screen. I repeat that these lines are flickering, and that I can still see the image, but they become more intense as the TV heats up. It's as if there is something that is heating up in the TV.
I called an independant TV repair man, and he tested the TV. He said that is was the power supply board. He told me that the more it heats up, the lesser voltage it gives, thus causing this display.
I didn't really trust this guy's diagnosis cause he didn't look like someone who really knows what he's doing. He seemed to be just looking for the $75 that he charged me for the diagnosis. So I tried some other tests to verify this.
First, I connected the AV output to another screen, and the image was perfect, meaning that the internal decoder is decoding the image correctly. Then I opened the tv and unplugged most of the rebbons and re plugged them, but still no result. Then I demounted the power supply board myself and tried to look for some short circuit or a burn trace, but I found nothing. I know that this last test might be stupid, but the three coloured vertical lines that I see as soon as I turn the TV on made me think that there might be a short circuit somewhere.
After all this, now I turn to you to see if anyone had a similar problem and found out what was the reason.
Should I trust the repair man and buy a new power supply board ($200 on ebay) or should I do another diagnosis (another $75) to see if they give the same result?
If anyone has any experience in this, I would appreciate your help.
Thanks
