Vintage VW bus/van upgrading engines?

IM thinking about buying a vintage VW bus/van for me and my band ......the thing is my friend told me they dont have strong enough motors to go on average highways and are dangerous that way because they are too slow.....I wanna know if its possible to put in an engine that is safe,not slow, and able to go on highways to travel
any advice is appreciated thanks
 
I believe it's Monofco, that makes a 2165 stroker for them, but ya you can make a bus scream, youtube vwbus.
