Volkswagen Jetta engine compared to Nissan Maxima?

I currently hve a 2001 Nissan Maxima and I'm looking for a new car, I've come across a 2003 VW Jetta and wa just wondering how the engine compares.

Like horsepower, top speeds ect.

Also if it accels as fast as the maxima?
