I have a 2005 Volkswagen GLI w/80,000 miles on it and it seems like the transmission is slipping. Specifically there is hesitation when I accelerate and the RPMs rev but the gear seems not to engage, then it does lurch a bit. This happens it what would be 2nd or 3rd gear (it's automatic). I've taken it to 2 non-Volkswagen mechanics who tell me I need a $4-5 thousand dollar tran job! Help!!!

Some automatics have clutches, some have torque converters, not quite sure which yours has, could be due to other things as well. I don't drive an automatic, I'm not well versed. However, have you had your fluid and filter changed, should have been done 20,000 miles ago. Do you drive with a lead foot all the time or do you live in a harsh environment, such as a desert, mountains area, do a lot of city stop and go, you should have done it sooner. VW automatics NEED the change, it's more unusual for the newer ones to do it, but since you're in a Mk4 it comes as no surprise.

You might have this transmission, you might not, but here's an example of what can be happening:
