VW Golf MK4 keeps shutting off?

I have a Volkswagen Golf Mk4, 4dr petrol. It is a 51 Reg, first registered in November 2001. It has done 69,000 miles.

Recently (this year) the car has been having a lot of problems. It makes a strange vroom, vroom, vroom, vroom noise at tickover when the car is first turned on but this settles and goes. I had this checked at a reputable garage and they found no problem with it.

Then an emergency warning light came on with regards to emissions - got this taken to the garage - and it turned out to be an electrical fault.

But recently - in the past 3 months the car has started shutting off completely sometimes at standstill. It did this a lot, coming to a stop at standstill e.g. at traffic lights and then shutting off - and taking up to 3 attempts to get it started. Took it to a different garage and no problem was found. The problem then became more occasional and then went away. But a week ago it did it again requiring 3 attempts to get it going again. Then it was fine for all of last week but this morning when i came to a stop at the traffic lights it shut of again - requiring 5 attempts to get it started.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be wrong with the car - as now two very reputable garages - that have fixed many of my cars over the years cant find a thing wrong with it. Is it worth taking it in again - wasting yet more money?

*I would just like to note - it is not a case of stalling - it is more a complete shut off - and when attempting to turn it back on - everything just lights up - no igniton noise - until after at least 3 attempts it actually ignites and starts up again.

Thanks for any help, sources would help e.g. if you are a mechanic and your knowledge of cars

It could be something as simple as a fuel problem, like the float chamber in the carburetor, another thing to check is the coil, these have been known to break down under load, both of these can be replaced cheaply by getting parts from a breakers

youve a good car, take it to a v/w supplier im certain your cars fuel pipe is too close to the manufold, the fuel in the pipe leading to the carb is vaparating..this would cause the irradic ideeling.it would take a few attemps to start the car if no petrolwas being fed to carb.,,,,,,,,,,,get the mechanic to do a test run you go with him .
