I have a 1981 VW Vanagon air-cooled gasoline engine. I think the engine is pinging under load (sounds kind of like a loud diesel engine for a few seconds while accelerating). I usually set the timing using a timing light. Does pinging indicate the timing is too advanced?
I also pulled the plugs and they are BLACK and dry. This indicated overheating right? Could the timing be responsible for this too?
The engine's oil light also flickers after the engine is warm - on idle.
Any help appreciated. Just trying to sell the van!
Thanks!
