Begin with your favorite foods and cuisines. You will be happier than if you try dishes you've never heard of or had unless you are adventuresome or a seasoned cook. It's fun to go off the path and try something new, but if you have something to compare to in taste (something you have had and like) then you will have a good idea of what it is suppose to be as a finished product and would help in developing your cooking skills.

A good cook can pick out by taste alone, what is in a dish, all the ingredients and spices/herbs, right down to the addition of sugar.
 
you dont need a systematic approach, just stop thinking about it, pick a recipe and cook it :) even co ordinate a meal together
