wats the point of wifi on your phone if you still have to pay to use the internet?

I asked a question earlier if wifi woujld cost me, and someone said that wifi is free but they still charge you to use the internet. Well then whats the point? You can just use the normal att internet 3g connection...well if I'm mistaked plz correct me. Please tell me if you can use wifi using your home router completely free, or starbucks or someplace, and not have to pay. And so.....wats the point of wifi
 
You can use an existing wifi connection (an open connection) for free with a wifi compatable phone.

It's possible the individual was referring to the fact that if you wanted to use a wifi connection at your household you would be required to pay for Internet services. If you are already paying for home internet services, you can just use that without any additional costs on your phone bill.
