We keep getting sales calls on landline after 6pm, can we do anything?

Hi,

We moved into our house just over a year ago, and when we activated the landline, we were automatically assigned a number. It seems that this number must have been used by every occupant of the house before us as we get calls for the people we bought the house from, and the owners before them. Also, we constantly get sales calls, all through the day, but more so after 6pm and up until 10pm some nights!

How can we stop this? Is the best thing to do to change our number?

First change your number - BT will do this free if you're getting nuisance calls. Then join the Telephone Preference Service http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/

That won't necessarily stop the sales calls, but you tell the caller that you are a member of the TPS and that you will charge £100 for each subsequent call. That gets you off the list fast.
