Weekly Sketch Thread -

Okay, being serious here, I found some good reference material for this theme.

I will from now on post them here....

because this is the thread for sketches... NOT for reference vids!!!

Repeat after me....

LOL! Thanks. I was on the fence about whether they should go with the theme of the week or over in the reference thread.

* mumbles..you think you're so cool with that goatee...

** Ahem...

I will from now on post them here....

Fishy - get back to basics and try to get the structure in! When you veer from that they become overworked outlines. Not much life in them... remember you want to go for the gesture the overarching movement in the pose. You need that to build construction on! Then you can add forms and detail... you have the horse before the cart.

lol @ the circle comment. Fish, I'd say you definitely have an intuitive feel for your drawings. Do you act these out when you're working out the sketch? It definitely looks like you feel the drawings based on where you put your emphasis. Pretty cool stuff!

YES!!!!! Sharp very sharp FuBag!!! Keep 'em comin' I'll post somem tomorrow once I'm half awake.

Thanks, Slip.

I was having a tough time tinkering on that one. And there were several GRR-related nicknames involved before I finally just decided to post it. I'm going to see about correcting some things and pushing more action into it once I have time later.

Im a crappy sketcher but a fairly decent artist if we look at finished product. These were all drawn and then scanned so the quality has dropped a wee bit.

Cool, Bigmikey.

I was thinking it might be nice to have a finished pieces thread to compliment this one. What do you think? Open question if anyone else wants to answer.

I pick up my drawing pad from time to time but get so disrtracted due to the kid, the dog, the wife, etc that I usually dont get more than a few lines down before I lose my motivation. Same with my writing. I've been aching to write a novel now for EVER but everytime I start something happens and *POOF* there goes my train of thought..... maybe this will help with the drawing at least.

Have you ever tried using a graphics tablet? They're pretty cool, and you can find bundled deals where the cost of the tablet and software is less than the software by itself. There's no scanning required and you get WYSIWYG quality for posting on MAP. Plus, you don't have to deal with a bunch of art supplies (especially cleanup!).

Is there any remaining interest in this type of thread? With kids, trying to keep caught up on stuff, and trying to keep the bills paid, I don't have a ton of time to sketch, but I was planning on contributing to some sort of MAP art thread. Most of the stuff I've been working on lately has been fundamentals, so it's not really fit for posting. I wanted to ask the MODs about this before continuing, though, since posting attachments takes up MAP storage space.

Can it perhaps be stickied so that it does not dsappear somewhere in the depths of the Off-topic forum?

On a different note, I may have something to throw in here by the end of the week. And I will say one thing - Bigmikey, IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT!!!

Bigmikey's probably used to hearing that by now!

Thanks, Moosey.

So since there aren't a bunch of sketches pouring in at the moment, will this thread become the catch-all MAP art thread? And if that's the case, will it become a storage space issue if people are posting image attachments of their artwork?

Hmmm... yeah it's been a bit slow. I'm wrapped in projects so I didn't manage to get to the 'weight' sketch even. Yikes. But... a few thoughts...

1) If it becomes just the random catch-all thread for art... not maybe such a great idea as - then it's just a showcase of what people are doing. Not so sure that really fits what I had in mind when I started it. I was hoping for something a bit more structured. I'm actually doing a similar thing with a friend who is an illustrator and we are going for much more random words, concepts and colloquialisms. We could go that route here as well... for example... we recently did 'When pigs fly' as a phrase that we had to illustrate... and we did the word 'resplendent' as the single word we had to illustrate.

2) If people are posting up art then we should arrive at some parameters. The best is to host the sketches off the site... with a Flikr or other similar account. If for some reason they are posted on here... the best would be to post them at 72DPI as a JPG or PNG attatchment. They should be sensible scans or decent photos. It doesn't really do anyone any good if they are taken on blurry, low quality cell phone settings. In this day and age it's not that hard to A) get access to a scanner... B) set your cell phone to better settings C) use a digital camera that has decent settings...

I'm open to ideas and suggestions. I'd like to get the thread back on track with a few more posts of sketches. More sketch less chit chat... ... but will be interested to hear peoples opinions and ideas.
