something else? Of course if it was blood there would be the health concern of HIV. Is there something else that could make the beef taste like that?

Beef is very high in iron, and just like with our own blood, beef blood has a metallic taste as well.
I've had beef that I've cooked myself taste a little more iron-rich than normal, so it's very possible that it was just the particular beef that you ate. What makes it that way, though, is something I'm still interested in finding out.
I highly doubt it was blood from a worker.
