I had the timing fixed but it was only advanced by 3 degrees. They said due to all the aftermarket parts they couldn't find the problem unless they could re-create it in the shop. It does it every once in a while on startup. I turn the key and *POP*, turn the key again and it starts normally. I think it has a holley carb that was modified to 750cfm, a unique holley high rise strip dominator and the engine is a 383 from a 84 chevy 350 4 bolt main. and MSD. What could make it do this?

Well it could be incorrect fuel mixture. Usually on a carburetors engine once the engine start (hot start) I step on the accelerator once to clear the carburetor throat. On Fuel injection engines you don't need to do this. Its a must that the ignition system is in good shape before making carburetor adjustments, This means good cap, rotor, plugs, wires, etc...

Sounds like you need to have the engine 'choked' more on start up. Turn the automatic choke a few degrees clockwise.and see how it starts.
