What are some unconventional ways to connect to the Internet?

On occasion I use my cell phone to tether, and more often than not I have access to wi-fi/ethernet, but assuming that conventional means of connecting to the internet were no longer options, could I still use dial-up from telephone lines, payphones, fax machines, or any other kind of connection to reach the internet?
