Please be serious - counter-intuitive to the point of the question, I know, but I'm actually genuinely interested in this.
Imagine your english teacher is testing you on the basic forms of humour. Now imagine that that english teacher doesn't actually know the answer, and needs a proper explanation. And finally imagine that that english teacher isn't an english teacher, but rather a 15 year old who - heaven knows why - wants to learn more about the semantics and types of humour at quarter to one in the British evening.
Any answers that attempt to provide insight and some detail would be greatly appreciated. I don't actually know a lot about the cogs and gears and various devices used in humour, so please go easy on the technical terms.
