What are the differences between these DVD formats?

What's the difference between DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW, and DVD-RW? I know that RW is rewrite and R is record but what's the difference between the + and the -? Which version can I use to record DVDs with the drive on my laptop? Are all formats compatible with laptops in Korea? (I want to send some home DVDs to relatives there)
