What are the similarities between Abraham Lincoln's Republican Party and Today's...

Ummm, in case you were not aware, the country is just a tad bit different today than it was 160 years ago.

That would be like comparing apples and oranges.

The name.

That's it.

Today's Republican party has more in common with the secessionist Democrats of the 1860s.

...Republican Party?
mercedes - you aren't answering the opposite to my question...

Lincoln's republicans were formed to stop slavery from spreading to the territories ....Today's republicans support slavery overseas and call it capitalism ...

Lincoln's party was more conservative, while today's republican party is more progressive. The republican party after the 2010 mid terms elections is more conservative.

The real racists hadn't joined the party yet back then.

When the Democratic party adopted the "liberal" (ie not racist) platform, all the Southern racists jumped over to the Republican party and hid inside the conservative Christian movement. It turned out to be a natural fit, each one providing a kind of defense against attacks aimed at the other. If people attacked the racists, they spout scripture. If people attack the weakness of their religion, they spout hate and intimidation.

Lincoln's Republicans freed the slaves from physical slavery. Today's Republicans are trying to free people from becoming dependent on the government for handouts. - a different kind of slavery. Howard Dean even said that Democrat's policies have lead to dependency.

Still conservative.

Still believes in small government, wants to make opportunity possible for people so they can do for themselves.
