well of course people want to come and hear about themselves.So instead of just making it about one or two sports or activites how bout you talk about all the activites that people participate in....It makes them feel appresciatesd. (spelling?) And maybe do a drawing for a few things...
Get everyone involved not just the preps, jocks, cheerleaders, fillies (if your school has them) etc
just have everyone want to go to it.. and don't repeat every year like mostly every school does..

When I was in high school we used to have many contests... techers vs students, which class is the loudest, best prop/cheer for each class, some prices to win... it was lots of fun!
