What can a guy talk about on dates to keep the girls interested?

I find it really hard on dates to keep a conversation flowing, mainly because of nerves, but also because i'm not a very good conversationalist. What topics can i talk about on dates? Also always after the first date i never hear back from the girl/s, so i must be doing something wrong. I'll arrange a 2nd date, but it never happens, so what must i do? People always say make the girl laugh is best, but i'm always so nervous on dates that it's hard to be funny all the time on a date and i'm always conscious of saying something funny but it ending up sounding stupid and not funny.

Do not talk about yourself anyway. Ask her about her life, make like you find her the most interesting person in the room.
