what can i use to convert .avi files to dvd files without computer crash?

i have a windows vista pc computer......downloaded queer as folk AVI files but i wanna make it so i can burn them to a dvd and playit on my dvd player is there anything i can use that will convert without viruses or my computer crashing.........anything.....and does AVI files play on Playstation 3????
