what causes firing problems in a Ruger Mark 2 Pistol?

i am trying to figure out why this Ruger Mark 2 Pistol won't fire. when the trigger is pulled nothing happens at all. the gun was sticky but has been cleaned and still won't fire. went to the firing range to test it after cleaning and did nothing at all. it appears the problem is somewhere between the trigger and the firing pin. but what could cause the problem? how to fix it?
