What constitutes a great sense of humor ?

1.Not offending most people when you tell a joke. 2. Saying something you did not mean to be funny,but having people laugh at you because it turned out funny. 3. Being about to joke at yourself . 4.Intelligence and tolerance(worldly) Do you agree. Sometimes I don't have one and I seek to try to be more humerous
I meant being able to take a joke about yourself from others(not to proud or egotistical)
I say things that aren't funny in my head but come out funny to others.

I once read somewhere that humor was finding the misfortune of others funny.
I remember thinking-That's crazy. More like sadistic than humorous.But then I
started thinking about things that people laughed at and I realized, wait a minute,
that's about what it amounts to! Someone slipping on a banana peel-guy sits on
a whoopee cushion=Charlie Chaplin eating his shoe, he's so hungry- someone
fixes a bucket of water to drench someone when they open a door- pinning a
"kick me"sign on someones back- on and on. Of course, there's verbal humor,
but that's still at someone else's expense. Even self-deprecating humor is at YOUR
expense- look at Rodney Dangerfield-" I don't get no respect!". The examples, if you
think about them, are endless.To me, another' weird, but true' moment. Of course,
there's wit, irony, word-play etc., but that's another topic for another day. Did you hear
the one about the guy trying to sell a blind horse?

I think what constitutes a great sense of humor is the ability to see, and remark upon, contradictions, outpoints, oddness, etc., in the world. The human condition has been a fertile source of humor, nearly forever.

You have a good list traits.

Looking at every thing a little differently helps too.

Being able to make fun of and laugh at ones self helps too.

Great comedians are usually highly intelligent too.

A great sense of humour is about being able to recognize funny stuff and laugh at it! Whether the funny stuff is ironic comedy, Coincidental comedy, visual comedy, silliness etc... If you are actually trying to understand how to be funnier then that's a different question entirely. The first rule of doing comedy is understand your audience. There would be no point in telling jokes about God if you are at a christians convention.!!! Just like you would probably never tell a sexual joke to your granny!. There is a whole branch of "sick humour" that would only ever be used with very broad minded people! You get the point? So .... if you are out with the football team then a few jokes about a referee or a lines man would probably work well, if you were out at a restaurant with a wealthy client then a joke about the economy might work well. There w as one thing Sascha Baron Cohen once said in an interview which I never forgot. He said that his comedy teacher was an amazing tutor and he told Sascha that the secret to being funny was to discover his inner idiot! If you study his character Ali G then you can see exactly how this works well. Deliberately acting goofy and brainless in certain situations can be funny.. if you have that much humility! I really think it's mainly your own opinion, but I have to say, the people who stand out to me as most humorous aren't usually offensive, and aren't afraid to have someone joke about them.
